How Can You Tell That You’re Saved?

By Victor Ochieng

Humans are prone to sin and that’s why Romans 3:10 says that “No one is righteous; not even one.”  We’ve all fallen short of the glory of God and our salvation is only by God’s grace through His precious son Jesus Christ. Because we err more often than not, a true believer must always repent and ask God for forgiveness, whether for a sin they know or those they don’t know.

But the question that many keep asking is: How do I know I’m saved?

The book of Matthew 7:21-23 says that not all who proclaim Jesus as their Lord are saved. And on the day of the great judgment, some will come to Jesus saying, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?” And He will answer them and say, “I never knew you.”

From the context, it’s clear that these are people who believed they were saved. They may have exuded confidence before the day of judgment, believing that they would inherit God’s Kingdom. But it’s not by man’s wisdom, and that’s why we can’t even boast of the precious gift of salvation. “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

All in all, it’s good to know when you’re saved, right? Unfortunately, if you’re waiting for some notable physical event to happen in your life to confirm your salvation, you’re likely not to find one.

All that’s needed is faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. The first step is declaring that Jesus is Lord and acknowledging that He rose from the dead. Once you accept Jesus as your personal savior, walk in righteousness and pray incessantly for the forgiveness of sins. Have faith in Jesus Christ, trusting that He’s faithful and wouldn’t let you down provided you cling to him.

God, the Father tells us clearly that when we move closer to Him, He moves closer to us as well. To those He loves, He also gives them His Holy Spirit to be their comforter, teacher and counselor, allowing them to continuously walk in righteousness and not be intimidated by the things of this world.

Once you have God’s Holy Spirit, your walk in Christ will be solidified and you’ll know that you’re born again. It’s through the manifestations of the fruits of the Holy Spirit in your life that you’ll know that the former things in your life have passed away and that you’re a new being.
