Meet These Black Celebrities Who Don’t Believe In Jesus Christ

By Victor Ochieng

One thing that stands out among many Black celebrities is their belief in God. This is often evident during award shows, where they thank God for their wins. Reports have also clearly shown that religion, particularly Christianity, is deeply embraced by Blacks, with many of the celebrities having been brought up in church, meaning they grew up believing in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Some celebrities have chosen a different path though. Below are some of them who don’t believe that Jesus Christ is God, either completely or the Orthodox way:

Samuel L. Jackson – No doubt he’s one of the most celebrated Black actors to have ever lived. He’s very talented, which makes his movies sell far and wide. However, he doesn’t believe it’s God who’s given him the talent. Asked whether God was responsible for his success, his response was, “No, because I work at it. I still learn, I read.”

Chris Rock – Those who know Chris Rock very well are aware he was brought up in a Christian background. But it appears that things changed along the way, seeing him abandon his Christian faith. Rock has gone as far as stating that “A black Christian is like a black person with no memory.”

Morgan Freeman – This is that one character whose unbelief in God is quite ironic, being that he’s even played God in a movie. During one interview, the interviewer assumed he was a man of God, but he came out to dismiss that, saying, “When did I say I was a ‘man of god’? …[I am a man of] faith! There’s a big difference… We take a lot of what we’re talking about in science on faith. We posit a theory… and until it’s disproven, we have faith that it’s true.” He only believes in the power of belief, but not that there is a higher power somewhere.

Tyler The Creator – Even though he’s got a Christian background, he distances himself from religion. At one point he said religion “keeps people in a box and won’t allow them to do what the f*ck they want.”

Robin Quivers – She “doesn’t believe there’s a god.” Of course, that’s why it doesn’t bother her being on her show with Howard Stern, considering how Christian values are broken in that show.

John Legend – The singer too has a Christian background, but that must have faded off along the way. In some of his songs, he questions why, if God really exists, He allows so many troubles on earth. “You know I have my issues with faith nowadays. I grew up in a religious home, but I’m not religious right now. But I’m trying to get back in touch with the things that were good about the faith that I grew up with.”

Donald Glover – This rapper-cum-comedian grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness, but he disassociated himself with religion and even christened himself an “airport atheist,” which means he might only end up praying if there is a turbulence on a plane.

Neil deGrasse Tyson – Although he’s wildly claimed by atheists, he’s actually an agnostic. Tyson, an astrophysicist who studies the universe says there is no way the universe could be under the stewardship of a loving God. “Every account of a higher power that I’ve seen described, of all religions that I’ve seen, include many statements with regard to the benevolence of that power. When I look at the universe and all the ways the universe wants to kill us, I find it hard to reconcile that with statements of beneficence.”
