The New York Post is reporting an incredible story from the Detroit area, as a transgender father and daughter are sharing their journey together from mother and son. The story begins with Corey Maison, who at the age of 15, first told her parents that she was grappling with her gender identity, but only learned that her mother was dealing with the same struggle a year ago. Now, they lean on each other as the teen chronicles their journey both on her Instagram and through an interview on Australia’s “60 Minutes.”
“I wanted to make my parents proud of who I am, but I thought that they would not like me,” Corey said about coming out as transgender. However, her family was supportive and encouraged Corey along her journey. In fact, not only were they supportive but Corey’s disclosure caused Eric Maison, who formerly went by Erica, to address his own feelings regarding his gender identity. “The first feeling was relief, the second was terror,” he said when discussing his emotions. “Fear for what my future would hold, fear for how my family and children would, fear for what the rest of my life was going to look like.”
Since then, he has undergone a double mastectomy and plans to stay with his husband, Les, who has been a supportive force throughout both their transitioning processes. “I fell in love with the person. She was beautiful as a woman, but equally beautiful on the inside,” Les Maison said. “As long as Eric is happy with the appearance, Eric will be happy with what’s in her brain – or his brain.”
“Our relationship is actually stronger and better than it ever has been in the 10 years we’ve been together,” Eric shared in an interview, saying that Les has always been a supportive figure in the relationship. However, despite what appears to be a happy ending, Eric, now a recently transitioned father of six, shares that he does have regrets for not coming to terms with his gender identity earlier.
“The only regret I have is not being educated sooner about what transgenderism was, so I could do it sooner,” he said. It is believed that Eric and Corey are the first known example of a parent and child publically coming out as transgender and transitioning.
