The body of a Virginia woman reported missing two weeks ago has been found. The police said the remains were found behind a Charlotte, North Carolina, church this past Friday.
“#FBI is seeking info. in the disappearance of Ashanti Billie in Norfolk, VA. Up to $10,000 reward being offered,” read a September 26 tweet by the FBI Most Wanted Twitter handle.
The CBS News reported that the body was discovered by a man who was cutting grass behind the East Stonewall African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The man smelled a strange odor and checked around only to bump on the decomposing body.
“It is with deep regret that I inform the community that Ashanti Billie has been located, deceased, in Charlotte, North Carolina,” said Martin Culbreth, special agent steering the Norfolk Division of the FBI. “I, along with the entire investigative team, offer our most sincere condolences to the Billie family, especially Ashanti’s parents, Brandy and Tony. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
Billie checked in at her workplace on the day she went missing but didn’t show up for work. She served as an assistant manager at a Blimpie sandwich shop. Camera footage showed her car leaving the 4,000-acre base that morning, with no information about where she was going.
After news went out that she was missing, the FBI tracked her phone to a trash bin and her car too was found abandoned.
The FBI would later offer a $10,000 reward for anyone who’d provide information leading to Billie’s location. Blimpie announced it’d top up the reward to $20,000.
Her parents said Billie was a student of Art Institute of Virginia Beach, where she was studying culinary arts, reported Heavy.com.
Police didn’t provide any information on the possible cause of death or how Billie ended up in North Carolina. Authorities said Saturday that they’ll continue with their investigations into the matter after the remains were positively identified as those of the teen.
“Our community should know that our work does not end here. Now our mission is to bring justice for Ashanti, and we will be relentless in our efforts to find who did this to her,” said Culbreth. “We will not rest until the person who robbed Ashanti of her life, her promise and her future is held fully accountable under the law.”
Anyone with information regarding Billie’s death has been asked to come forward to help the authorities get to the root of the matter.
