When Pope Benedict stepped down from office in February this year, the first time a Pope has resigned in 600 years, he said that he was doing so because of ill health.
However, now it appears that he is claiming that God told him to resign after a “mystical experience.”
According to Benedict, who now lives within the Vatican gardens in a secluded residence, he had a “mystical experience’ with God and He told him to resign his office and devote the rest of his life to prayer. Although Benedict still holds the title of Pope Emeritus, he is no longer involved in Vatican politics and has few visitors.
Apparently Benedict’s “mystical experience” lasted for months and created his desire to have an exclusive relationship with God. He added that he now understands God’s will for having him resign after seeing the “charisma” of Pope Francis.
Some people were concerned when Benedict resigned from office that having two living Popes could lead to unrest and mistrust within the Vatican, but Pope Francis made a joke about the issue to ease people’s minds.
Francis said the last time there was more than one living pope, there were two or three of them and they continually argued about who was the true pope. He added that having Benedict living within the Vatican gardens was like having “a grandfather – a wise grandfather, living at home.”
When Benedict first announced his intention to resign, some people thought that he might be depressed after his trusted butler, Paolo Gabriele, leaked his personal correspondences.
Zenit wrote that when Benedict receives visitors today he makes no comments or reveals any secrets that could be misconstrued as the “words of the other pope,’’ he just continues to be reserved as he always has been.
