5 Things You Should Know About the C.O.G.I.C Denomination of Christianity

by Brian Skyz

Formed in 1897, the Church of God in Christ is a Christian denomination hugely dominated by African-American individuals, with over 5 million believers. Its wings spread in over 70 countries on various continents. It is, in fact, the largest Pentecostal church in the United States. It holds dearly to Christian traditional doctrines, such as repentance and holiness, faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sin, infallibility of the word of God, the true nature of God, and rapture of the Christian church.

The members are involved in various ministries such as the prison ministry, health and wellness ministry, and also urban and global outreach ministries. Below is a list of things about the Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C):

1. A strong belief in the Bible

The denomination believes the Bible to be the only true doctrine in which God speaks to and inspires them. All authority and order which they practice comes from the word of God, whose nature they try to imitate.

2. Christ the son of God is the promised Messiah

They believe that Jesus Christ is indeed the son of God who was sent to the world to act as the bridge between the world and heaven. Church of Christ in God believes in the conception of Jesus Christ through the Virgin Mary as it is documented in Mathew 1: 18. They believe that it is through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus that the relationship between man and God was renewed after the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden.

3. Belief in the Holy Spirit

The followers in this denomination believe in the Holy Spirit and in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. They believe the Holy Spirit is a gift possessed by the believers of Christ to better serve as a witness in the body of Christ as is witnessed in John 16:13.

4. Belief in second advent

They believe the second coming of Christ is eminent as detailed in Acts 1:11. He shall come from heaven to earth to pick His flock.

5. Trust in Christ’s saving power

They believe in the divine healing and miracles of Christ and He possessed power and authority from God to perform the miracles.
