Are Biblical Marriage Proponents Subject to Discrimination? This Congressman Thinks So

There is a constant debate over whether or not marriage should be between one man and one woman or whether any two people (or things) can get married. The debate has gotten to the point that some Christians are starting to feel that gay rights groups are bullying them by telling them that they are bigots just because they believe in traditional marriage.

A Republican Congressman out in Idaho has different ideas and says that he wants the alleged discrimination to come to an end.

Representative Raul Labrador has submitted the “Marriage and Religious Freedom Act,” asking that those who have beliefs that differ from liberal trends be protected under the law from discrimination. The bill has gotten strong support from fellow representatives and appears to have a chance to go far.

“Regardless of your ideology, we can all agree about the importance of religious liberty in America,” he stated in a news release. “Our bill will protect freedom of conscience for those who believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue. As President Obama said, ‘Americans hold a wide range of views’ on marriage and ‘maintaining our nation’s commitment to religious freedom’ is ‘vital.’ We agree.”

The new bill would keep the IRS from revoking the tax-exempt status of organizations that do not support gay marriage. He also wants there to be a ban on keeping these individuals from getting the same benefits and opportunities as other American citizens.

“Our bill will ensure tolerance for individuals and organizations that affirm traditional marriage, protecting them from adverse federal action,” Labrador said. “I’m [pleased] to be joined by my colleagues in introducing this bill, and will strongly advocate for its passage.”
