White evangelicals have been widely criticized for a number of reasons. From being blamed for sheer hypocrisy to being labeled silent racists, they’ve heard it all. This time, it’s Bishop Paul S. Morton, senior pastor of Changing a Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, who’s come up with an accusation against Alabama white evangelicals, terming them an embarrassment to the body of Christ.
“All I can say [to] Alabama White Evangelicals u r an embarrassment 2 the Body of Christ Worshiping an idol god GOP party over Godly Morals Over Abused Children in last days false prophets will rise up Uv a form of godliness but denying the Power May God Have Mercy on your Souls,” the Bishop wrote on Instagram.
The main reason why Bishop Morton is speaking out strongly against white evangelicals is their support for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who’s been accused of inappropriate s*xual contact with a minor. The said incident took place at a time when Moore was 32 years old and the victim was 14 years old.
While it’s understandable to support Moore because of the person he is, many are concerned that white evangelicals aren’t giving much thought to the allegations being leveled against the GOP candidate. In fact, some have come out to defend him and justifying the former Alabama Chief Justice’s actions using the Bible account of Joseph and Mary, saying the Virgin Mary was a minor and a virgin.
The Virgin Mary comment was made by Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler.
“(T)ake Joseph and Mary,” Zeigler told the Washington Examiner. “Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus. There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here. Maybe just a little bit unusual.”
According to Zeigler, a 32-year-old making out with a 14-year-old is nothing serious, and so he believes all those speaking against Moore are simply making something big out of nothing.
Defending Moore, Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of evangelical Liberty University, said, “The same thing happened to President Trump a few weeks before his election last year except it was several women making allegations. He denied that any of them were true and the American people believed him and elected him the 45th president of the United States.”
These and many similar comments by Moore’s defenders are what may have pushed Bishop Morton to speak like he did against white evangelicals.
