Can God Bring Two Christians Together Through Online Dating Services?

By Staff Blogger

While some Christians believe online dating is one of the ways that God can bring two people together of similar faith, others believe that Christians shouldn’t use online dating services because it shows a lack of faith in God in finding the right partner for you.

Those who believe online dating is okay for Christians say that their faith is in the Lord to find the correct partner for them and not the matchmaking site. They point out that many loving couples have met online and have a happy, healthy marriage. They say online dating in itself is neither good nor bad. It depends on the individual that uses the online dating services and for what reason they are using them.

According to its website, Boundless, the online community program for young adults from Focus on the Family, says that it is a community for Christian young adults who want to grow up, own their faith, date with a purpose, and prepare for marriage and family.

Focus on the Family uses its website, Boundless, to encourage young people to find their faith in Christ and to teach them to watch out for opportunities that God may present to them.

Boundless has joined up with ChristianCafe.com, an online dating service, in providing Biblical based relationship advice and resources for young Christian adults who are preparing for marriage. However, after having met someone on an online dating service, where do you go from there? Here are some tips that you might find useful:

1. As soon as you are comfortable with the person online, make a personal meeting as soon as you can

Online dating should be used to get introduced to new people. Most successfully married couples usually meet soon after becoming friends online. Don’t carry on a relationship too long online otherwise you may be disappointed when you actually meet in person and have wasted a lot of your time on the wrong person for you.

2. Be careful what information you give out online.

Not everyone online is what they seem to be or say they are. Make sure that your first personal meeting is in a safe place, preferably a public area.

3. After the initial meeting, in person, introduce them to your family and friends as soon as possible.

Try to get your family or friends to check out your new friend. They may see something in them that you have missed and try to get to know their friends and family soon so you know what you’re getting into.

4. Don’t worry if the first meeting is a little awkward.

Similar to regular dating, online dating can be a bit nerve wracking the first time you meet. However, unlike blind dating, with online dating you should know a little about your new friend before the first personal meeting and they should know something about you.

5. Trust in God.

Even though you might have found out a little bit about your future prospect of romance from the online dating site, pray and trust in God to lead you to the right decision.
