Donnie McClurkin Admits He And His Girlfriend Need Counseling Before They Marry

By Andre Jones

Donnie McClurkin, one of the most recognized and successful names in modern gospel music, became embroiled in controversy a couple of years ago after coming out (no pun intended) against the Supreme Court’s same-s*x marriage ruling over a decade after announcing that he was cured of his own homos*xuality. Last year, McClurkin revealed that he and 49-year-old gospel singer, Nicole C. Mullen, had been dating and were moving towards marriage.

Matthew Crouch, the host of faith-based talk show Praise the Lord, announced on his show Thursday, “Donnie McClurkin’s getting married! Come on!” McClurkin and Mullen cautiously validated the announcement, with Mullen making it clear that while they were indeed dating that they were not set to marry. “There’s a protocol that both he and I want to honor. So, are we officially engaged? No,” Mullen clarified on Periscope. “Are we on the road to marriage? Yes.”

“Honestly, the only thing in my life that is missing is marriage,” McClurkin told Crouch. “The only thing that is missing in my life that can cause real family, is marriage. Financially, I’m there. Spiritually, I’m almost there. Emotionally, I’m getting it together”

Though McClurkin has professed love for Mullen, he posted on live-stream app Periscope that no wedding is being planned until the couple is properly counseled by a bishop. McClurkin, the pastor of New York’s Perfecting Faith Church, recently told Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) that not having a wife to share his life with has deteriorated from a feeling of having a “void” to progressing into a “chasm”.

“God literally caused me to accomplish everything he purposed me to do — and more. I have two wonderful children, love my boy, love my girl. The wife aspect is the void. That’s the goal that I’m looking to fulfill in this last chapter,” McClurkin told CBN earlier this year. When asked what was holding him back from marriage, McClurkin bravely admitted that it was fear, telling CBN how he wants to have a wife but is afraid of failing at marriage.

“I’ll tell you I’m frightened,” he said. “My fear factor has paralyzed me from going forward in relationships and I think that this time I’m going to wade through the fear in order to finish my life.”
