God’s Grace Isn’t For Sell At Costco

By Victor Ochieng

When dealing with the worldly things, more so foodstuffs, you always have the option of purchasing bulk and stocking them for future use. You can purchase a month’s food and live off it comfortably for the entire period regardless of whether the store from where you purchased them is closed for the month.

That narrative is totally different from what the children of Israel experienced for 40 years when God fed them on manna. Every morning, they would wake up to a bounty supply of food. They were instructed to take as much as was enough for the day; just one day. The next morning any remainder from the previous day would be full of worms and develop a terrible odor. Interestingly, because God allowed them to take enough for two days on Sabbath eve, the manna wouldn’t go bad during the Sabbath.

Exodus 16:35 says: “The people of Israel ate the manna 40 years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan.” God used to give them the supply each, every day.

Living in an inhabitable land meant that, for most of them, if not all, they were worried about the next day and would try to keep some extra. But after realizing that if it wasn’t on a Sabbath the food would go bad, they realized that there was no need taking too much after all. But then again, they may have wondered why God didn’t just allow them to pack as much as they wanted, even if it was for a week?

Well, the truth of the matter was, feeding the children of Israel manna was an act of grace, and God wouldn’t allow anyone to stock up grace. It’s something constantly supplied by Him. It’s not because God doesn’t want to give it to you in abundance, it’s because he wants to create a relationship with you.

There are times you would feel uncertain about tomorrow, but that should just be a reason for you to seek God and stay closer to him.

Even Jesus, God’s only begotten Son, used to seek daily spiritual strength from His Heavenly Father (Mark 1:35), believing that God would provide all He needed for every single day, according to God’s will.

The world isn’t such a nice place. We face numerous challenges; we lose our loved ones; we give birth to disabled children; we’re faced with wars; and people die of hunger. As we go through these challenges, we need to remember that for as long as God provides us with strength for the day, we should be grateful.

But most importantly, let’s keep strengthening our relationship with God as that’s the greatest of all.
