Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Church in Riverside, California was joined on stage by his wife, Cathe, during his latest sermon directed towards women who wanted to get a “new” husband.
According to Laurie, if you heed the advice given by the Apostle Peter, you can have a “new and improved” husband. He added, however, that first of all they must become a “new wife.”
In order for women to reach the non-believing or marginally believing husband, Laurie says they should read Peter’s advice in 1 Peter 3:1-4.
The passage tells women that they should accept the authority of their husbands and that even if their husbands refuse to obey the Word of God, they will show a good example to them through their own godly lives.
It goes on to say that the husband will be won over to Christ through their observance of their wives’ behavior.
The passage continues to advise women not to be concerned with worldly things, whether they look beautiful or have expensive jewelry but to concentrate on the beauty that comes from within.
Laurie expanded on the scripture passage by sharing four things that a woman should do to gain a “new husband.”
1. Be the best that you can possibly be – women should try their best to live Godly lives. They should strive to obtain that beauty that comes from within and not only that which shows on the outside.
2. Respect your husband – Wives should be submissive to their husbands so that by their example they can win over an un-believing husband to Christ. Wives should love their husbands and show them respect at all times, even if they feel unloved and disrespected.
3. Submit to your husband – Wives should submit to the leadership of their husband according to Laurie. He said that although men and women are created equal, women should meet the needs of their husbands before thinking about their own.
He went on to further explain that 1 Corinthians 11:3 states that “But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ if God.”
4. Don’t talk too much and nag your husband – Laurie explained that while women were naturally more talkative than men and could use that verbal power to persuade their husbands, they should not use it to manipulate them.
Laurie expanded that by nagging your husband it does not help to win him over to Christ. He quoted Proverbs 19:13, which states that the argument of a wife is continual nagging.
Cathe said that her submission to her husband was like submitting herself to her spiritual leader. She added that respecting and obeying her husband did not in any way undermine her dignity as a woman.
Cathe pointed out that Christ’s submission to God the Father was not an assault on the second person of the Trinity.
Cathe’s advice to women when they wake up in the mornings is to pray to God for guidance and patience. She added that marriage was like a garden that would take your time and hard work to produce fruit. “Hang in there, don’t throw in the towel… Have a long-term goal,” she said.
