Although former First Lady/Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a gathering of approximately 7,000 women that she is a firm believer in Jesus Christ and believes we should follow His example by feeding the less fortunate among us, she also supports that which her United Methodist Church (UMC) upbringing is staunchly against — abοrtion on demand.
On Saturday, Clinton told the United Methodist Women’s Assembly in Kentucky that she believed it was everyone’s responsibility to take care of the poor and try to fight against other issues that are plaguing the world such as sëx trafficking of women and children.
Clinton continued that she had always held the beliefs of the UMC most dearly because that is what she grew up believing. She added that the churches rigorous discipline to obey Scripture as well as to fight for the rights of the less fortunate, as Jesus did, have guided her throughout her professional career and personal life.
Clinton told the delighted crowd of women that she believed that Christ set an example for us to follow when He fed the five thousand people who had come to hear Him speak, even when His disciples wanted to send the people home.
Maybe Clinton is doing what any good politician would do if they are planning to run for office: Tell their constituents what they want to hear. This is especially necessary if she intends to run for President in 2016, as many believe she will. She’ll need to secure the support of the poor.
The former first lady also touched on her belief that women deserve to be paid the same as men and she assured the women present that she would continue to fight for this cause.
However, if Clinton believes in the Word of God and values the principles of the UMC so highly, doesn’t it seem strange that she would support abοrtion rights for women and same-gender marriages?
During International Women’s Day in March this year, Clinton spoke to the United Nations about her support for both these unbiblical causes. She added, “You cannot make progress on gender equality or broader human development, without safeguarding women’s reproductive health and rights. That is a bedrock truth.”
However, the UMC stands with its traditional beliefs that abοrtion and homos*xuality are incompatible with Scripture. Only in the case where the woman’s life is in danger, does the church agree that the termination of the fetus should be allowed.
