A Vancouver man with no shoes found himself in the presence of a Good Samaritan (pictured) on Saturday. The homeless man was wearing plastic hairnets on his feet as shoes/slippers, until a man (who wishes to remain nameless) gave the struggling man the shoes off of his own feet. A bus driver watched the exchange happen and said that it was a very touching moment for him.
The good samaritan said that he was only a short distance from home, so he gave the shoes to the man and walked home barefoot. He was contacted by the media but asked to remain anonymous. He is of Islamic faith which dictates that acts of kindness such as this be anonymous. He didn’t want his photo to be used at first either, but eventually he said okay to the photos that were posted on social media.
The bus driver said that this is not something that you see often. He stated that most of the time people won’t even give others that are dressed like the man with no shoes the time of day. Sometimes they won’t even sit next to a person dressed like that. The man who gave up his shoes said that he felt bad for the man and that it was a very short walk home for him.
This act of kindness reminds some of a 2012 photo of an NYC police officer buying new boots and heavy socks for a homeless man on the side of the street. Officer Larry DiPrimo was photographed putting the boots next to the man sitting outside of an NYC storefront. A year after the incident, DiPrimo was promoted to detective and given a nameplate from the other detectives that reads Larry “Boots” DiPrimo on it to symbolize the nickname that he had been given by those on social media who spread his story around.
