A lot has been said about liberalism and being free to do certain things as long as it doesn’t affect the lives of others. But even with all the freedom achieved thus far, there are moments when society stops and asks, ‘Are we doing the right thing?’
A new ABC Family show called “Becoming Us” is something that has led many to pause and ask whether it’s a good idea. The show has widely been referred to by critics as perversion used to make a profit.
The show is about a young teen, Ben, and his transgender dad, Charlie, who’s gradually turning from being a man to a woman. The idea behind the show, which airs Monday night, is to educate us and our children about transgenderism, more or less to convince us of its normalcy.
Considering the timing of the show, it’s a strategic move to root transgenderism into society. It’s coming right on the heels of the news about former Olympian Bruce Jenner, who has chosen to become a woman. Jenner, who decided to undergo surgery and change his name to Caitlin, made headlines. While he was hailed as brave to some, he was also widely criticized.
So, seeing ABC Family bring “Becoming Us” to television at this juncture is in line with what GLAAD and other LGBT organizations have been campaigning for — space to promote their orientations. In fact, the idea of ABC Family being one of the most conservative networks is long gone. It’s changed so much that even GLAAD considers the channel one of the gayest networks out there. An analysis of the channel shows that up to 50 percent of its prime time programs feature LGBT characters and content.
Kate Juergens, the chief creative officer of ABC Family, says “We want to represent family in a contemporary and authentic way.”
That borders closely to what Tom Ascheim, president of ABC Family, has said about the new program: “It’s a moment in our society when the world is focusing on transgender issues, so it only helps us!”
