Since becoming famous for her far-from-Christian rap music, Nicki Minaj has shown hints of interest in religion. She grew up as Onika Tanya Maraj in a home with a mother who claims Christianity. She admits to being highly influenced by religion and has even said that she is saved.
In the past, she has given thanks to God and to her pastor, Lydia, from the public platform. When asked, she will say that her two heroes are her mother and God.
The confusion comes from her performances that feature inappropriate clothing, religious mockery, and the lewd lyrics of her songs. Each glimmer of religious affiliation is always stained with the substance of who she is as a popular artist.
“Blessed. Highly favored. Grateful. Thankful. In love. In love with the Lord’s mercy,” Minaj once wrote on Twitter. “Heading to my TV auditions. I’ve found some really amazing people. Still looking for the right woman to play my mother. Can’t wait to share.”
While she has shown glimmers of hope through Tweets and public statements, only God knows her heart.
“Ppl pray for riches. Remember to pray for wisdom,” she Tweeted last year.
It has always been her mother, Carol’s, hope that she would use her fame as a way to encourage others to seek out the Lord. She continues to pray for her daughter and believes it is her prayers that brought her to fame.
“My life as a Christian and believer was opened to Onika. As her career continued to thrive, she developed more concerns about life,” Carol previously told The Christian Post. “She knew I believed in the power of prayer, therefore, she constantly called me and our pastor, to pray for different concerns she may have … I believe by her acknowledging the power of prayer, and her strong desire to tithe, together with a praying mother, contributed to her success.”
The most open Minaj has been about her own prayer life may have been in an interview with “Elle,” when she shared about being a mother herself one day.
“I was praying every day, ‘You know what, Lord? I want to be a mom one day, and I want to start becoming the woman who I want to parent my child,'” Minaj said.
What do you think? Is Minaj caught between two worlds?
