GoFundMe is an excellent resource for those who are raising money for a cause and need a medium for the collection of funds. However, the concept is easily abused and mismanaged, creating more and more need for the owner of the site to intervene. One of the latest attempts at raising money was from Ken Mack who asked the public to help him obtain an engagement ring for his fiancé-to-be.
In the informational portion of his page, Mack pleads with the public to donate to his cause. “I meet a beautiful young lady and I feel if I don’t make her an honest women and wife here quick she may not become whole so I’m asking for help with an ENGAGEMENT RING. Yours truly, Former Playa that’s hanging up his player shoes,” he writes.
Seeing it for what it was, GoFundMe took down the page after a short period of time. Mack, apparently, was seeking out at least $5,000 to purchase the “engagement ring.”
Mack’s efforts were noticed by several online users and created a series of responses from those who found his endeavor humorous and ridiculous.
Glorelys Mora-Liz Tweeted, “I WISH my man would try to try me and create a #GoFundMe page to raise money for an engagement ring. .. Like, no. Absolutely not.”
“Ummm, really!!! I think you’re only in a relationship for today Ken!” another user wrote, later commenting that she didn’t believe he was even in a relationship in the first place.
“If you want to raise money, auction off your black book,” another snarky commenter, Tiffany Collins, stated.
Before the page was taken down, Mack did end up raising a total of $20. Though it’s not much, it’s something and he didn’t have to do a thing to earn it. Do you think more people will start taking advantage of this type of site?
