The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey has led to so many discoveries. Recently, many church leaders came under fire for not assisting the flood victims. But as we sympathize with the many evacuees, the most reputable charity organization is now under harsh criticism. With the many shocking news surfacing about these organizations, it only brings to question the state of our society.
In a desperate attempt to help the Hurricane evacuees, pastor and activist, Jamal Bryant has been trying to expose such organizations. In a post online, he said “We have no confidence in the Red Cross they collected 1/2 billion for Haiti and built 6 houses. Send gift cards so people can get what they need! 4217 Primrose Avenue Baltimore Maryland 21215.”
The pastor claimed that the Red Cross was not offering the flood victims sufficient funding. And that most of what they collected were used for other matters and not to assist the intended victims. However, he wasn’t alone in blasting the Red Cross; T.I. also spoke strongly against Red Cross and FEMA.
In a post on Instagram, T.I said, “They say Faith without works is DEAD!!!! We ALL need to WORK on coming together & utilizing our resources collectively to do some meaningful shit to people who need US more than ever!!! @kevinhart4real salute for responding with a challenge that WE ALL NEED TO ANSWER!!!! #Pray4Houston #USorELSE.”
Now, all these criticisms came after the Wednesday news that exposed the dark side of the Red Cross. Apparently, after the Haiti earthquake, Red Cross collected funds but didn’t help the earthquake victims. According to investigations led by Charles Grassley, the Red Cross reported funding wasn’t done transparently and properly.
Grassley reported that the Red Cross collected a total of $500 million that was to fund the reconstruction of homes, aiming to resettle the victims. However, only six homes were built using the said money. This has led to questioning of the organization’s credibility. And now, everyone is doubting whether the organization will faithfully assist Hurricane Harvey victims.
Another Red Cross executive was put on the spot by Morning Edition, but he openly dodged to answer most of the questions claiming “I wish I could answer your question, but it’s not something I have visibility on in the role that I play in this organization.”
It’s indeed a very disappointing discovery to find out that the organizations that have for the longest time been a source of hope have today turned around to be untrustworthy.
