Zarephath, A Gospel & Jazz Infused Musical is the perfect free family friendly entertainment for you and your loved ones this summer. Columbia University Schapiro Theatre showings are Friday August 11, 2017 at 7PM and Saturday August 12, 2017 at noon. It is based on the Bible story found in First Kings 17:1-16 (KJV). Through song and dance this musical tells the story of the widow woman who shares her last meal with the prophet Elijah while in the midst of drought. Zarephath is written, composed, and directed by Ayvaunn Penn — a Christian dedicated to sharing God’s Word through art. Click here to reserve your free seats to see Zarephath.
Penn is best known for her last play entitled, King David: The Original Musicless Musical, which was praised by theatre legends such as two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang. It explores the impact of King David’s most infamous sins on his children — particularly his daughter Tamar.
Ayvaunn is currently the Columbia University School of the Arts Dean’s Fellowship recipient for the Master of Fine Arts Playwriting class of 2018. She has also worked alongside Golden Globe winner Regina Taylor and two-time Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson as assistant director. She is also the founder of Bible & Penn Productions.
