You grow up believing that your pastor can be trusted. Sometimes, the trust is misguided, as it was in the Catholic church for so many years. Even worse, children who report that their pastor has harmed them in some way are more likely to be met with punishment than protection from their parents.
A pastor in Tulsa, Oklahoma was arrested this week after a 15-year old girl says that he abused her. She also told police that he was the father of the child in her belly.
Gregory Ivan Hawkins may be going to jail for a very long time for his offense. It is also going to be difficult for him to fight the charges, since the young woman has “God’s evidence” in her stomach. Should a DNA test prove that he is the father, it could lead to him losing everything.
Pastor Hawkins is being held on $50,000 bond at the Tulsa County Jail. The 54-year old man allegedly began his inappropriate relationship with the young women when she was just 14 years old. This, according to the police report, began back in April of 2012.
The pastor reportedly works at the Zion Plaza Church, which also owns the Zion Child Care & Learning Center.
The moral of the story is quite simple. Don’t trust anyone around your children, and always keep a watchful eye. Most abuse occurs at the hands of the mother’s boyfriend, a coach or a pastor. It’s always from the person you least expect it, and you may not find out until it’s too late.
